let's talk about mugwort because it's having a moment and also because it deserves one. mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) is the herb i reach for when i need to dream on purpose. it's bitter, it's weedy, it grows in vacant lots and along train tracks — which is part of why i trust it. plants that thrive in disturbed ground know something about thriving in disturbed ground. three ways i actually use it: 1. **dream pillow.** dried mugwort + a small handful of lavender (mugwort alone is intense, lavender softens the edges) sewn into a square of cotton, tucked inside your pillowcase. expect vivid dreams within 2–3 nights. expect to remember them, which is the actual point. 2. **pre-ritual tea.** one teaspoon dried mugwort steeped 5 minutes in just-off-boil water. bitter. add honey. drink 30 minutes before a working where you need to be receptive — tarot, scrying, deep journaling. it loosens the analytical grip. 3. **threshold smoke.** dried mugwort burned on a charcoal disc at the door of the studio before a session where i need to bring something through. not as a "cleanse" — as a signal to myself that this room is a different room now. contraindications, because i'm not your aunt's blog: don't use mugwort if you're pregnant, on blood thinners, or allergic to ragweed. it's a thujone-containing herb so don't drink it daily for months on end. respect it. forage it if you can ID it confidently. buy it dried from a real herb seller if you can't. price should be under $8/oz; if someone's charging you $30 for "moon-charged ritual mugwort" run.
