the Bel Fires, explained: traditionally at Beltane, two great bonfires were lit side by side. cattle were driven between them before being sent out to summer pasture — it was purification, protection, a passage from winter stores into growing season. people walked (or leapt) between them too. if you don't have livestock or a bonfire: two candles, on a fireproof surface, is the entire ritual in miniature. write what you're done carrying. light the paper at one candle. let it burn out safely. walk between the candles. done. the thing on the other side of the fire is not the thing you brought in. that's the whole point.
